Prayers and Squares
Our ladies' quilting ministry meets several times a month in the Loft:
- A "Red, White and Blue" military quilt group meets every Monday except the first Monday of each month from 1:00-3:00 p.m.
- Another "Red, White and Blue" group meets on the second Tuesday of each month from 7:00-9:00 p.m.
- A third group (non-military) meets from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month.
- In addition, youth groups and quilting "how to's" are offered throughout the year.
Members use one of the sewing machines here or bring their own to create prayer quilts for church members and others in need; for more information, please contact Judi Evans.
United Methodist Women
The United Methodist Women (UMW) at Lakewood UMC is a dynamic group of women of all ages dedicated to the missions of women and children, as well as fellowship with one another. Our local unit supports our congregation through U.M. ARMY, summer church camp scholarships and the Matthew 25:35 Ministry (“I was hungry, and you gave me food. I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink. I was alone and away from home, and you invited me into your house.”) We conduct Bible and mission studies; coordinate the church-wide garage sale; and hold a women's retreat each winter. We also support Northwest Assistance Ministries (NAM), the Wesley Community Center programs, international missions, Star of Hope, Boys and Girls Country, Habitat for Humanity, Methodist Children's Home (in Waco) and other "hands on" projects throughout the year, along with international missions such as African aids orphans and UMCOR. UMW President Sharon Corl would be happy to answer any general questions about our local UMW unit. Our unit is organized into six circles, or small groups, which meet monthly from September through May. The General Meetings for all members are held in January (installation of officers, special mission recognition and certificate awards), September (Membership Luncheon or Tea), and November (World Thank Offering and mailing of care packages to our military personnel and college students). Our year concludes with directing the Alternative Gifts Market at Christmastime. To learn more about the global impact of UMW, click here.
